In the name of great poet, writer and dramatist William Shakespeare, 23rd April is been observed as Shakespeare Day in order to pay tribute to him. It is believed that this great personality died on this day in 1616. This idea to celebrate this day was brought in by Robert J Williamson who is the Artistic Director of British Shakespeare Company also this idea was supported by the people in United Kingdom and government too.
As we know William Shakespeare is also called as England’s national poet and the ‘Brad of Avon’. Some of his writings include Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth which are considered as some of his finest works. To pay him honor on this day people goes to his birthplace Stratford-upon-avon , Warwickshire in England. His plays performances are also performed each year which is enjoyed by many tourists. The procession begins by laying flowers at his grave, bands performances, costumed actors, dancers, staff and pupils.
To come across with the great contribution of one of the named authors like him, it is now becoming important for the upcoming generation also to know about him especially for UK’s school students. This is important because nowadays teens only recognize Shakespeare as a matter to study ,about him from the point of view of just passing the school exams by studying about him in textbooks. So, to overcome this thing Shakespeare week is also celebrated in many schools to introduce them to his creativity and influence them also.
This week helps in encountering school children with this personality. Every year it is estimated that around 1.5 million children across the UK comes to celebrate this week which is hosted by many cultural partners every year. This counting has just begin few years back only and is increasing each year as people in UK and all over the world are becoming aware about this celebration year by year. Though, It is not observed any kind of holiday in banks, etc in UK on this day yet but people celebrate this day with great enthusiasm and zeal every year.
