We all have that one gift of the creator God, called Mother. To honor that one of the most important person in each and everyone’s life “MOTHER”, Mother’s Day is being celebrated all over the world to pay a tribute to her.
The celebration of this day began in US in early 20th century; this day was firstly celebrated in West Virginia in 1908, in the memory of Anna Jarvis’s mother Ann Reeves Jarvis at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church.
Now at present, this church holds the shrine of International Mother’s Day after the campaign being started by Anna Jarvis in the year 1905.
As, Ann Jarvis was an activist for wounded soldiers of American civil war and also she created Mother’s day work clubs to solve the public health issues, so her daughter continued that work being started by her mom and set aside a day to honor all the mothers in this world.
Initially, this proposal was rejected by the government of US in the year 1908. But, after many efforts of Anna Jarvis, by 1911 the holiday was being observed in all the US states, West Virginia being the first one to consider the second Sunday of May as a local holiday.
In the year 1914, Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that second Sunday of May will be recognized as a national holiday called Mother’s Day, to pay a tribute to all the mothers.
Many issues aroused after this, as many companies started making cards for mother’s day specially, so Anna Jarvis exploited this idea and explained those people that this day is not to make profits but it is about the sentiments of people for the mother’s. She appreciated those who gift handwritten letters, handmade cards to pay tribute to their mother.
While in other countries, this day was not celebrated as on the same day in West Virginia. In UK this day is seen on Mothering Sunday and Virgin Mary day same as mother’s day in catholic countries.
In the year 2016, this day is being observed on 8th of may which is celebrated as international festival for everyone.
