Shravan month marks the beginning of monsoon i.e. the rainy season in India. The word “Hariyali” means “greenery” that is a symbol of growth and prosperity. Thus, Hariyali teej is the celebration on this greenery and growth. It is a celebration of the renewal of the earth after a very hot and dry summer.
On this special day, Goddess Parvati (also named as Teej Mata) is worshipped by all women. Goddess Parvati is wife of Lord Shiva. A variety of songs are performed in honor of Teej Mata and Lord Shiva, where the idols are kept at the centre.

Hariyali Teej is the day when Lord Shiva had finally accepted Goddess Parvati as his wife. According to Hindu mythology Parvati was in love with Shiva. Being an ascetic Lord shiva was not aware of her.
Parvati performed penance on the Himalayas by observing a fast for many years and finally Shiva took notice of her. Then Lord shiva came to know about her love and devotion towards him and agreed to marry her. Since then Parvati has been worshipped as Haritalika or Teej Mata.
Complete Shravan month is observed as a festive month. People worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati Whole month. It said that by worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in shravan month, one can get whatever they want.
Especially it assumed that Unmarried girls achieve desired good husband and married get happy and peaceful life with their husband. Unmarried girls and married women keep fasting this day. During the fast food is being offered to Brahmins and young girls.
HAriyali Teej is also observed as singara Teej. Singara in real is a gift which is given by a Married girl’s parents-in-laws to her on Teej Day. Shringara items consists of Henna, bangles, traditional dress known as Leharia, sweets, Sindoor (vermilion), etc.

On this day, women apply Mehndi (Henna tattoo) to their hands and feet. It is a belief that darker the color of Mehendi on a girl’s hand, the more is she loved by her husband. Women also write their beloved’s or husband’s name on their hands with the Mehendi designs. On Teej day, everyone wear new clothes, jewelry and worship Lord Shiva.
For performing the puja women gather at a nearby temple or a garden. A semi-circle is created and an idol of Goddess Parvati is kept in the middle. The main puja begins with holy offerings of flowers, fruits, sweets and coins. One lady or all the ladies together narrate the holy Teej Katha. Young girls also sit and listen to the katha.
