Mahatma Gandhi or Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi is the name that is written by golden ink in Indian history. Respected Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi also named as ‘Father of nation’. Gandhi Jayanti Observed by India in significance to honors Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s role in Indian Independence. Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated as a National Holiday in India to mark the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhi was born on 2nd October 1869; therefore each year Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on this day. It is observed in all states and union territories of India as one of the three official declared National Holidays of India.

In Indian history, on 15 June 2007, The United Nations General Assembly announced that October 2nd will be celebrated as the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi had a natural love for ‘truth’ and ‘duty’. With his complete dedication and confidence, Gandhi freed India from the British Rule and proved the world that freedom can be achieved with non-violence.

Even today his teachings are encouraged to stay away from violence and find peaceful solutions to conflicts. For Gandhi, Truth and Non-violence was his entire philosophy of life. Mahatma Gandhi was a man with simple tastes and values. With keeping that in mind and giving him full honour and respect the festivities on this day are very less.

Gandhi jayanti is celebrated all over the country in both government and non-government organizations. All offices, schools, colleges and organizations remains closed on this special day to pay homage father of nation. Additionally, as a tribute to this great soul, the Indian government mint rupee notes and also issue postage stamp depicting Mahatma Gandhi’s photo. Every year on 2nd October, the President of India and the Prime Minister, along with other political leaders, pay homage at Raj Ghat, the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi. People gather to observe Gandhi Jayanti in innovative ways that includes offering flowers on Gandhi’s pictures, statues and singing his favorite devotional song Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram. Prayers and Verses are read out from Holy books of all religions.
