In the history of South Africa in the year 1994 on 27th April, the first non-racial democratic elections were held. This is marked as an important date in the country’s history because the country got freedom after three hundred years of colonialism and after the freedom its democratic government was led by Nelson Mandela with a new state subject to the constitution.
In the same year elections were held in the country in the peaceful manner where various important parties participated in the elections. In the elections everyone was freely allowed to vote from the age of 18 years without any restrictions to caste, groups, etc. even the foreign residents voted. In the year 1995, on the same date President Mandela delivered very emotional and encouraging speech in the public, in which he reminded every citizen about the importance of being south African and how they overcame with the non bearing rule in their past. He thanked everyone of the citizen of the country for their contribution in the fight for the freedom of the country.
On the same date in the year 2008, President Thabo Mbeki in his speech delivered about the brutalities like detentions without trials, exile, forced removals, hangings and many such injustices done with dark ones that made their lives not less than a hell and where they were never free. On 16th anniversary of the freedom day, President Jacob Zuma paid tribute to the brave activists who helped in the liberation of the country.
After its political freedom, South Africans have corrected their many mistakes that were done in the past. But many more issues related to caste, religion, sex, gender, etc. still prevails in the country which has to be taken as a matter to be solved before it becomes another major issue for the country.
