Cchath pooja is one of them which is an hindu festival and only Vedic Festival dedicated to the Hindu Sun God, Surya and Chhathi Maiya. According to the Hindu calendar, it is celebrated at the 6th day of the month of Kartika (month of the October or November). The rituals of the festival are rigorous and are observed over a period of four days. This year Cchat pooja is start from 27 October and will end at 30th October.

Chhath Pooja Schedule is Following:

1.    Monday, 27th of October 2014 is the day of bath and eat.

2.    Tuesday, 28th of October 2014 is the day of fast which ends after sunset after the 36 hour long fast.

3.    Wednesday, 29th of October 2014 is the day of Sandhya Argh known as the evening offerings.

4.    Thursday, 30th of October 2014 is the day of Suryodaya Argh and the Paran or breaking of the fast.

On this special day lord Surya is worshipped by people. Surya or Sun is considered the god of energy and of the life-force. This celebration and worship of sun people do, to promote well-being, prosperity and progress. In Hinduism, Sun worship is believed to help cure a variety of diseases, including leprosy, and helps ensure the longevity and prosperity of family members, friends, and elders.

History and Origin of Chhath Puja

It is assumed that the Chhath puja was first started by the Surya Putra Karna. He was a great warrior and had ruled over the Anga Desh (Munger district of Bihar) during the Mahabharata period.

Another history behind celebrating the Chhath puja is the story of Lord Rama. It is considered that Lord Rama and Mata Sita had kept fast and offer puja to the Lord Sun in the month of Kartik in Shukla Paksh during their coronation after returning to the Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. From that time, chhath puja became the significant and traditional festival in the Hindu religion and started celebrating every year at the same date.

The rituals at this day wake up early in the morning, take a holy bath in the Ganga and keep fast for whole day, even people do not drink water and for a long time they keep themselves standing in the water. They offer Prasad to the rising sun and pray for the prosperity of their family members, relatives and friends.
