A Great Festival of Loving Brother – Sister Relation

rakhi 2016 greeting

Relations are most important part of an individual’s life. Life begins with relation. With the birth of a human, thousands of relations are born with them too. Although, Parents are the beginners of a new life, but other than them, there are thousands of relations that exists and are carried out lifetime.

Relations could be of Brother-Sister, Uncle-Aunt, Nephew-niece, Grandfather-Mother and many more. Relation of Brother-Sister have its special importance. This relation is about Love, Care, Trust, Protection and togetherness. A cute relationship which is shared by two together, though this relation can never be expressed in words. Brother-sister relationship exists between men and women who are relatives, siblings or biologically unrelated to oneanother.

In India, we celebrate many festivals to strengthen many relations.Like, Father’s day, “A special day which is dedicated to all the fathers”. Like wise Mother’s day which is celebrated to strengthen the bonding between a child and a mother. Like all these festivals, Brother – Sister Relation is also celebrated in a huge festival called Raksha Bandhan.

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates love and duty between brothers and sisters. It is called Rakhi Purnima, or Rakhi in many parts of India. The festival is observed by Hindus, Jains, and many Sikhs. Jain priests observe this day as a religious festival, as they have a custom of giving thread on this day to their devotees. Raksha Bandhan is primarily observed in India, Mauritius and parts of Nepal.

In Nepal, it is called as Janai Purnima. It is also celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs in parts of Pakistan, and by some people of Indian origin around the world. The festival falls on the full moon day (Shravan Poornima) of the Shravan month of the Hindu lunisolar calendar, typically falls in the month of August.

There is always a story or legend behind celebrating any festival. Same as others, there is also a legendry behind this Raksha Bandhan festival. The custom of rakhi is told to begin from the time of Lord krishna, when once Draupadi tore off her piece of cloth which she was wearing and tied it on Lord Krishna’s bleading finger, since then Krishna promised to protect her from every trouble. So, whenever Draupadi called him up he would come to her rescue and give her lot of clothes.

One story is of the legend of Queen Karnavati and Emperor Humayun. According to the Indian medieval history, Queen Karnavati of the Rajput Kingdom, Chittor had sent a Rakhi to Humayun the Mughal Emperor of Delhi seeking his help against Bahadur Shah of Mewar.

Emperor Humayun knew about the significance of Rakhi in the Hindu community hence accepted her request to protect Queen Karnavati. Since then the ritual of tying of a sacred thread Rakhi on the wrist of brothers is celebrated with much fervour all over the country.

The story of the legend of King Bali and Goddess Laxmi is also a popular one. According to the legend, Lord Vishnu was immensely pleased with his devotee King Bali thus granting him a boon of immortality and promised heavenly protection for his kingdom. In order to fulfil his promise Lord Vishnu left his abode Vaikunthdham and came to stay with King Bali.

Soon Goddess Laxmi visited King Bali on the Shravan Poornima day disguised a poor Brahmin lady and tied Rakhi on his wrist. When King Bali tried to give her some present, she revealed her true identity and asked the King to send Lord Vishnu back with her to Vaikunthdham.

Since then Raksha Bandhan celebrates the eternal bond between brothers and sisters all over the country.

Each and everyone enjoys this festival with full of joy. People starts the preparation for this festival before some days of the final day. Days and weeks before Raksha Bandhan, women shop for Rakhi, the ceremonial thread to tie around her brother’s (or brother-like friend’s) wrist. Many women make Rakhi themselves for their loving brothers.

Rakhi could be a simple thread, woven and colorful; or it could be intricated with amulets and decoration on its top. Rakhi is a simple thread, which strengthen or binds the relation of Brother – Sister with a node.

On this special day everyone wears new dresses. If Brother – Sister lives distantly then on this special day, they get together to celebrate this special festival. Even if they could not meet eachother this day, then e-rakhi facility is also available to us nowadays. Another option could be of sending the rakhi and sweets through online courier services too.

Different sweets and dishes are made at home and are bought from the sweet shops. The ritual typically begins in front of a lighted lamp (diya) or candle, which signifies fire deity. Sister and Brother both faces each other. This ritual sometimes involves aarti, where a tray with lighted lamp or candle is ritually rotated around the brother’s face, along with the prayers and well wishes.

Sister ties Rakhi on her brother’s wrist. She pray for her brother’s long life, good health, prosperity and happiness. In return brother gifts her something as a token of promise of her protection and gives best wishes and blessings to his sister.

Brother’s promises their sisters that they will protect them from every bad and evil things in their life, and they will stay together always. Brothers give several kinds of gifts to their sisters like greeting cards (specially made for Raksha Bandhan), money, teddy, clothes or thoughtfully.
