Meaning of Durga:

Once there lived a gaint named Durgam in India. Everyone living on earth, heaven and hell were terrified by his cruel acts. Then, Goddess took the Avtar of Durga or Durgseni and killed that monster. She saved the life of devotees and Brahmans. By killing the monster Durgam, she go famous as Durga. The word “Durga” in Sanskrit means a fort, or a place which is difficult to overrun. Another meaning of “Durga” is “Durgatinashini,” which literally translates into “the one who eliminates sufferings.” Thus, Hindus believe that goddess Durga protects her devotees from the evils of the world and at the same time removes their miseries.

The eighth day of durga pooja celebrationi is the most important day to worship. It is known as Durgashtami, or Durga Ashtami, Mahashtami. On this special day fasting is undertaken by many people. Durga Ashtami is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Ashtami in Ashwin month or Ashwayuja masam. In 2014, Durga Ashtami date is October 2.

Astra pooja is done on mahashtami, in which weapons of goddess durga are worshiped. In hindu religion this is the most important day during navrati. There is also a belief in some regions that Goddess Kali appeared from the forehead of Durga on this day to annihilate Chanda and Munda and Rakthabija.

On mahashtami day, nine small pots are installed in the all nine forms of goddess durga and nine Shaktis of Durga are invoked in them. All nine goddess forms are worshiped with joy and happiness. On this day young unmarried girls, being treated as Goddess Durga itself. This is called kumara pooja or kanya pooja. In many regions Kumari Puja is done during all nine days of Durga Navratri. Kumari Puja on a single day during Durga Puja is preferred on Maha Ashtami.
