Indians and their rituals, tradition, and festivals are very popular all over the world. Dhanteras is one the popular festival which is celebrated in Indian every year. Dhanteras is a Hindu festival, which is celebrated with full of joy. Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day Diwali Festival as celebrated in India. The festival is also known as “Dhanatrayodashi” or “Dhanvantari Trayodashi”. The word Dhan means wealth and Teras means 13th day as per Hindu calendar. The festival of Dhanteras falls in the month of Kartik (Oct-Nov) on the thirteenth day of the dark fortnight. This auspicious day is celebrated two days before the festival of lights, Diwali.
On this special day, lord kuber is worshipped by everyone. It is believed that he is the god of wealth and blesses her devotees with wealth and health. On Dhanteras, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being. Dhanteras holds special significance for the business community due to the customary purchases of precious metals on this day. On Dhanteras Hindus consider it auspicious to purchase gold or silver articles or at least one or two new utensils. It is believed that new “Dhan” or some form of precious metal is a sign of good luck.
How to Celebrate Danteras?
Like other festivals, dhanteras is also celebrated with happiness and joy. On Dhanteras, Lakshmi – the Goddess of wealth – is worshiped to provide prosperity and well being. On this day, in the evening, the lamp is lit and Dhan-Lakshmi is welcomed into the house. House are decoradted with alpana or Rangoli designs, these are drawn on pathways including the goddess’ footprints to mark the arrival of Lakshmi. Aartis or devotional hymns are sung eulogizing Goddess Lakshmi and sweets and fruits are offered to her. Many wear new clothes and wear jewellery as they light the first lamp of Diwali while some engage in a game of gambling.
Lakshmi pooja is the main attraction of this day, people do worship altogether. All family members and relatives east sweets and exchange gifts to each other on this special day.
