In Nigeria, Democracy Day is counted as one of the many public holidays. It is celebrated on 29 May every year in the honor of restoration of democracy in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, on the selection of newly elected President of Nigeria; Olusegan Obasanjo by the end multiple decades of military rule, once began in 1966 and disturbed by a temporary period of democracy from 1979-1983.
After being under the rule of Great Britain for several years Nigeria got independence in 1960,it became the victim of civil war and first of the military coups in 1966.From 1979-1983, democracy was partially re-established but mostly it was ruled by a series of military juntas .It’s preceding military ruler, Gen. Sani Abacha, died in 1998 and his descendant Gen.
Abdulsalami Abubakar took the command and introduced the democracy and a new constitution was adopted on 5th May, 1999.Elections were conducted and the previous military ruler Olusegan Obasanjo was confirmed as the new president.
By finishing of military rule ,a new era of democracy has started in Nigeria including the regular elections, free press, and end to the uninformed arrests and torture; but violations of human rights still occur.The military rule which was served in Nigeria has a big hand in losing his economical conditions and also had damaged its international image by practical corruption of military.
